In December 2021, O’Malley announced his new position as Chief Sustainability Officer for Vicinity Energy, the largest district energy provider in the United States. 2012–2013In 2012, O’Malley pushed for new energy-saving considerations in City buildings such as City Hall to measure how much energy it was using and whether or not it was efficient. The Vicinity district energy network in Boston and Cambridge currently reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the region by 165,000 tons annually, the equivalent of removing 36,000 cars from the road each year. Additionally, Vicinity is ramping up its decarbonization efforts in these cities, reducing its use of fossil fuels by electrifying its district energy system operations. In December 2017, O’Malley received unanimous support from his fellow Boston City Council members in passing an ordinance he had authored with fellow councilor Michelle Wu to ban single-use plastic bags from stores in the City of Boston.
It’s not something you read about, but it showed what local elected officials can do to help navigate bureaucracy of city hall, or dealing with Boston Public Schools, or provide small businesses support. It’s an ambitious vision that would sharply reduce the company’s local reliance on natural gas over time, and thus pare back its carbon footprint. But it’s a model that DiCroce hopes O’Malley could then apply in many of the cities where Vicinity has steam systems. O’Malley will become Vicinity’s first-ever chief sustainability officer, reporting to Bill DiCroce, chief executive of the Boston-based spinoff of Veolia North America. In that role, O’Malley will oversee Vicinity’s efforts to cut the carbon emissions caused by its steam heating and cooling networks, starting with the one in Boston and Cambridge.
